New Terminal 5 was opened for public in 2008, construction of the new terminal included construction of several tunnels: Storm Water Outfall Tunnel (SWOT), Piccadilly Line Extension (PiccEx), Heathrow Express Extension (HExEx), and Airside Road Tunnel (ART). Tunnels SWOT, HExEx, and PiccEx were excavated using tunnel boring machines (shields), precast segmental lining generated from steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC) without traditional steel cages was used on all three projects. Segments were generated from fibre reinforced concrete with 30 kg/m3 of steel fibres, moreover polyprophylene fibres were added to concrete to increase fire resistance of the lining. Shafts, cross passages and access tunnels of tunnels for Terminal 5 were constructed concentionally using sprayed concrete lining (SCL) method LaserShellTM. The method has a single-shell lining, all sprayed concrete is a part of the impermeable final lining.
