As a consequence, water flows laterally in the direction of the upper boundary of the lower inclined layer. Capillary barriers are successfully used as alternative insulation layers in engineering systems such as waste disposal sites or cuttings in road engineering. Under specific conditions these effects may contribute to the occurrence of large scale landslides. The formation of capillary barrier related funneled flow at an inclined slope, as a special form of preferential flow, has been studied using the simulation model S2D for selected combinations of soil layers with distinct hydraulic properties. The results of the analysis could help when numerical simulations are used to analyze key aspects and rules with regard to urban planning in potentially hazardous areas."@en .
