Taking advantage of convergence curves in the longitudinal direction constructed during excavation both in front of and behind the tunnel heading it is possible to extend the general formulation into 3D whilst maintaining the two dimensional format of the finite element mesh. In such a case the general two dimensional representation of the displacement field in the transverse direction is enhanced by exponentially decaying functions capturing displacement variations in the longitudinal direction. Such functions are constructed on the basis of in-situ measurements and can be progressively updated. Although this approach requires a relatively large amount of data to be stored along the process of excavation, its direct link to in situ measurements makes it considerably more reliable when compared with the convergence confinement method." .
