"Transparent magnesium aluminate spinel ceramics were fabricated by two stage consolidation process composed of hot-pressing and hot isostatic pressing starting from commercially available powders. Light reflection and transmission behaviors of fabricated ceramics were determined in the UV/visible and near-IR wavelength regions. The ceramic with a MgO to Al2O3 molar ratio of 1:1.5 revealed a relatively poor optical transparency due to pronounced light scattering at the microcracked grain boundaries. The other compositions revealed a high degree of transparency. The effect of chemical composition on fracture toughness of spinel was investigated by indentation and chevron notch fracture toughness measurement techniques. It was found that grain boundary microcracking was decisive in determining the fracture toughness of the fabricated spinel ceramics.
