"Atomic force microscopy (AFM) was applied to study the surface relief evolution at the emerging persistent slip bands (PSBs) in individual grains of polycrystalline ferritic stainless steel cycled with constant plastic strain amplitude. Quantitative data on the surface topography of persistent slip markings (PSMs) and on the kinetics of extrusion growth during fatigue life of specimen were obtained. Surface relief of the well-developed individual PSMs consists of extrusions with fine irregular structure and less numerous parallel intrusions. The early appearance of the first PSMs (at 0.5% Nf) witnesses the onset of cyclic slip localization in the PSBs and corresponds to the onset of cyclic softening. PSBs are active during the whole fatigue life. The high initial extrusion growth (0.03\u016F0.06 nm/cycle) decreased in the fatigue life without, however, ceasing completely."@en .
