"Mg-Fe nanocomposite was prepared using spark synthesis of pure Mg and Fe electrodes. The as-prepared powder was separated into two parts using a magnetic separation and a sedimentation procedure. The nanocrystalline powder (paramagnetic at room temperature) was analysed using x-ray diffraction and Mössbauer spectroscopy. From the x-ray diffraction measurements Mg, MgO, and a-Fe were recognized. According to the Mössbauer spectra analysis, iron atoms were identified in following phases: a-Fe, Fe in Mg, and FeO. The FeO was probably present as MgO-FeO solid solution and not recognized by x-ray diffraction. The Fe in Mg phase was represented in the Mössbauer spectra as two doublets with isomer shifts d1=0.16 0.02 and d2=0.43 0.01 mm/s relative to a-Fe and quadrupole splittings s1=0.84 0.02 and s2=0.80 0.01 mm/s. Low temperature magnetic measurements showed spin-glass like behaviour of the powder. Annealing in vacuum (10-3 Pa) or in the protective atmosphere (H2) caused transformation of the Fe in Mg phas" .
