"Cadmium belongs to the most dangerous environmental pollutants. Cadmium ions caused tobacco cells (TBY-2) to enter apoptosis. Phytochelatins (PCs) are cysteine-rich peptides involved in detoxification of heavy metals in plants and are synthesized in response to the heavy metal exposure. We utilized electrochemical analysis (at mercury electrode in presence of cobalt) to monitor accumulation of PCs in TBY-2 cells. Upon TBY-2 cultivation in the presence of cytotoxic cadmium concentrations, the PC levels increased during the preapoptotic phase and reached a limiting value at cultivation times coinciding with apoptosis trigger. The PC level observed for a sub-cytotoxic cadmium concentrations (10 uM) was about three times lower then observed for the 50 or 100 uM cadmium ions after 5 days of exposure." .
