In Levinas' words, as soon as I start to speak to the other, I am not the same, i.e. Saying undermines the identity of the subject conceived as consciously coming back to oneself. In Otherwise than Being Saying is interpreted as the passiveness of the subject addressed, which, being absorbed by this otherness of the heteronymous challenge, might ultimately disappear. Levinas, however, tries to avoid the complete disintegration of the subject by conceiving the subject addressed on one hand as deprived of his identity, but on the other hand as invested with the uniqueness of his own voice. The author tries to defend the subject: certain Self capable of answering should be preserved in spite of the transformation caused by Saying."@en . . . "241165" . .
