The developed technique makes it possible to on-line determine the actual hydrodynamic states of a fluidized bed spanning a wide range of operation regimes from the onset of fluidization through vertical pneumatic transport. The procedure employs the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) of a successive time series of pressure fluctuations, representing the fluidization behavior, and determines the fluidization characteristic of a desired bed. On the basis of this characteristic, the present study provides a qualitative and quantitative classification of modes of fluidization.
