"Photosynthesis depends on the amount of absorbed solar energy. Recently, attention is paid to its geometry (direct and diffuse components). Eddy-covariance measurements revealed that an increased proportion of diffuse radiation at the same irradiance leads to an increase in net ecosystem exchange of carbon (NEE), decrease in compensation irradiance and immediate increase in the quantum yield of photosynthesis. The reasons were identified 1) more favorable climatic conditions during cloudy periods, 2) stimulation of photochemical reactions and the stomatal conductivity due to changes in the spectral composition of incident radiation, and 3) higher penetration of light into the lower layers of the canopy and thus the active involvement of a larger leaf area in assimilation reactions. Top-down analysis showed that during the clear days upper floors crown layers show hysteresis response to irradiance and the relative proportion of photosynthetic activity increases in the lower layers."@en .
