PCR was used to detect specific antibiotic resistance genes. Plasmids carrying ESBL and/or PMQR genes were transferred by conjugation or transformation and characterized by PCR-based replicon typing and restriction analysis. From waterbirds, ten ESBL-producing E. coli with the blaCTX-M-15 or blaCTX-M-27 genes were isolated. In most isolates with blaCTX-M-15, the aac(6')Ib-cr gene was also detected. The bla genes were harbored by F and I1 conjugative plasmids. PMQR genes were detected in 25 E. coli. Six strains carried aac(6')Ib-cr and nineteen strains were positive for qnrS1. The genes were located on transferable plasmids of incompatibility groups N or X2. The finding of CTX-M-type ESBLs and PMQR genes in these animal species indicates rapid spread of bacteria with these resistance genes in the environment." .
