"Cyanotoxins can markedly negatively influence early life stages of fish depending on the quantity and kind of cyanobacterial biomass. They increase embryonal and larval mortality and amount of malformed individuals, decrease fry size, cause abnormal behaviour and may damage chromosomes. Chronic exposure of larvae also to lower doses of cyanotoxins exhibits higher death during the following rearing. Dystrophic changes of liver were observed up to older stages of fry, in younger larval stages high mortality and retarded development may be due to increased energy demand of detoxication processes. Histological damage is not evident. By the study of cyanobacterial fractions the most pronounced toxic effects were found at the complex biomass and the crude aqueous extract regardless of microcystin content and permeate fractions of two samples dominated by Aphanizomenon sp. and Planktothrix sp.
