"Lawsonia intracellularis is a Gram-negative, obligate intracellular bacterium causing proliferative enteropathy, a common disease affecting the intestine of domestic and laboratory animals. The aim of our work was to detect the presence of this bacterium in free living animals from the area close to the infected pig farm. In the year 2006, presence of L. intracellularis was monitored in game and rodents in proximity to the pig farm ZP Otice in the Czech Republic. Pieces of intestine (ileum, cecum and colon) were taken for the DNA isolation and further nested PCR assay. L. intracellularis was detected in 2 (25 %) out of 8 wild boars (Sus scrofa) and one (100 %) raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides). No presence of L. intracellularis was found in roe deer (Capreolus capreolus). Presence of L. intracellularis was proven in the mucous membrane of intestine of variety of rodents - house mice (Mus musculus), brown rats (Rattus norvegicus), common voles (Microtus arvalis), wood mice (Apodemus sylvaticus) an" .
