"We evaluated the prosperity of various forest regeneration variants after two years on an area clear-cut due to wind disaster affecting in 2010 allochthonous coniferous stands growing in mid-elevations of the Czech Republic. The forest regeneration variants established were as follows: planting of target species (spruce, beech), preparatory seeding -- non-target species (birch), and spontaneous succession. Pursuant to the current Czech forest legislation, successfully regenerated stand can be considered after two years a variant with the plantation in which the density of target species ranges between 6 and 9 thousand plants per hectare and the plants are distributed across the plot in a regular pattern. At these altitudes, the best doing species is spruce while the growth of beech is strongly suppressed due to inadequate climatic conditions of the wind-thrown area. The variants of seeding and natural succession can be currently considered unsuitable from the perspective of legislation, namely due to the low number of target species (total density around 3 thousand plants per hectare, plants with a height over 20cm only ca. 1 thousand per hectare) irregularly distributed across the plot. Moreover, these variants exhibited high densities of the non-target species of pioneer character with the density of regenerating birch of 131 thousand plants per hectare in the seeding variant being about eight times higher than that in the neighbouring variant of natural succession. The costs of regeneration amounted to ca. 6,000 EUR.ha-1 in the planting variant, and ca. 1,000 EUR.ha-1 in the seeding variant and natural succession variant (processing of logging waste). Although a wider use of natural processes, esp. preparatory species, in the regeneration of areas clear-cut due to wind disasters appears to be a rational tool, its employment in the Czech Republic is limited by strict legislative requirements a revision of which would be useful." . .
