"Bioavailable amino acids (including protein amino acids, D-enantiomers of protein amino acids and other non-protein amino acids) form up to 1 % of total soil amino acids have been intensively studied for last two decades. Bioavailable amino acids may be directly taken up by plant roots without their previous mineralization. This is especially relevant in alpine, arcticand boreal areas, where the availability of mineral nitrogen is low, thus, amino acids are important in plant nutrition. Bioavailable amino acids are extracted from soil using a broad range of extractants and procedures; demineralized water is seen to be the most frequently used extracting agens. Only two works are related to bioavailable D-amino acids in soil and a small number of works dealt with other bioavailable non-protein soil amino acids. D-amino acids are generally less mineralized by soil microorganisms compared to their L-counterparts, and after they are uptaken by roots cause toxicity to plants. Their occurence may be significant for growth of plants in different ecosystems.
