"The paper summarizes results from experiments with stress simulated by drought, increased nitrogen depositions and by the concurrent action of both stresses on Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.). Drought reduced both height and diameter increment, induced defoliation, reduction in the biomass of fine roots and their shifting into upper soil layers, impaired functionality, vitality and mycorrhizal infection of fine roots. Nitrogen depositions stimulated the diameter increment and reduced the height increment, induced reduction in the biomass of fine roots, enhanced vitality and decreased the mycorrhizal infection of fine roots. Fine roots responded to the simulated stresses already in the first year of their impact and were more affected than the above-ground part of plants. Transplants were more and faster negatively affected than a more stable twelve-year old stand. In the period of study, the drought was a stronger stress factor than the nitrogen depositions alone.
