"The aim of the presented study was to intensify the knowledge in the problems and to find out how soil compaction simulated by long-term load affected the shape and dimensions of metaxylem and deuteroxylem tracheids and thus the hydraulic conductivity of a root system of two-ear old plants of Norway spruce. The paper is the follow-up of a communication presented in previous seminars (GEBAUER, MARTINKOV\u00C1 2003, 2004). Samples of fine roots were taken from control and experimental plants and transversal microscopic sections were made from them to analyse dimensions of tracheid lumina and the proportion of cell walls in metaxylem and secondary xylem. In total, about 9500 cells were measured. Based on results obtained it is possible to conclude that in secondary xylem and metaxylem, the average area of cell walls was 1 and 5% higher, respectively as against control plants due to the effect of pressure.
