"Thyme essential oil belongs to the plant material with a powerful antimicrobial activity. The aim of the study was to test the antimicrobial effect of thyme essential oil on selected microorganisms without direct contact. Escherichia coli, Candida tropicalis and Penicillium chrysogenum were used for testing. The surface of the cheese or the surface of solidified nutrient medium was inoculated with 0.1 ml of bacterial culture of the appropriate density. On the inside part of the lids of the Petri dishes paper disk was attached. Disc were impregnated with essential oil of appropriate concentration. After a period of cultivation, plates were inspected. Variants of the experiment with nutrient broth in Petri dishes demonstrated inhibitory effect of concentrated thyme essential oil on the test microorganisms without direct contact. Antimicrobial activity of diluted essential oil was very limited. At the variants of the experiment with cheese the concentrated essential oil in a dose of 30 ml led to inhibition of the growth of P. chrysogenum and C. tropicalis without direct contact with the cheese. Diluted oil in this case was not effective. At E. coli visible changes or differences between the variants were not detected at cheese."@en .
