"Shelterbelts are considered to be one of the most effective measures against wind erosion. The specificity of these windbreaks consists in the fact that the effectivity varies during the year due to changing foliage of the wood species which form them. Right at the time of the lowest level of foliage or changes in foliage (in winter and especially in spring and autumn), arable soil is the most vulnerable, because it is not covered by the crops. The aim of this study was to prove shelterbelt effect on wind speed during two episodes with a very high wind velocity. The measurement took place in spring 2010 and 2011 in erosion endangered locality in south Moravia. Wind speed was measured on windward and leeward side of shelterbelt (formed by hardwood species) with slight foliage in certain distances. The effectivity of windbreak varied in the distance 50 m from windbreak (leeward side) between 52 % in April 2010 and 50 % in April 2011. In the distance 100 m it varied between 49 % (2010) and 47 % and 150 m from shelterbelt it varied from 40 to 41 %. Significant effect of slightly foliaged shelterbelt on wind speed reduction was proved also at high wind speed.
