"The main goal of this research was to quantify the basic shape characteristics by means of simple mathematical methods. Four varieties of grape vine were selected and analysed. All three approaches proven certain quantifiable differences among individual wine grape samples. Sphericity of the grapes ranged from 0.009874 (HIB) to 0.014530 (MAL) and its calculated value can be used for the design and evaluation of processing and handling operations, but mainly for purpose of consequent mathematical modelling. Reconstructed shapes (by use of Fourier descriptors) indicated that the first principal component (which represents the hight-to-width ratio) is a suitable measure of the total shape variation (85.46 to 89.04 % of the total shape variation)." . . .
