Phthalates and other polar polymers have been long used as softening agents in the production of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) to reach their flexibility. Owing to their excellent plastification and adhesion traits, phthalates are extensively used also for medical equipment, packaging materials and in other spheres of chemical industry. Since phthalates are not firmly bound in polymers, they can diffuse in the environment and become a potential source of the food chain contamination (KRAUSKOPF, 2003). Phthalates are animal carcinogens and may cause death or tissue deformities. They may compromise liver functions and cause reproduction toxicity at laboratory animals (LATINI, 2005). Dialkyl or alkyl/aryl esters of 1,2-benzendicarboxylic acid are produced by the chemical industry to be used in plastics. Phthalates cause environmental contamination. The most common phthalate in the environment is di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). Owing to their lipophilic nature, phthalates are released mainly into foodstuffs containing fat. It has been proved that phthalates migrate from packaging materials (TSUMURA et al., 2001). In the muscle and adipose tissues of farm animals in the South Moravian Region, measurable concentrations of DEHP (0.02 -- 1.71 mg.kg-1) and DBP (0.08 -- 4.17 mg.kg-1) were detected in all the samples analysed (JARO\u0160OV\u00C1, 2006). Since currently there are virtually no data on phthalate contamination of products intended for feeding farm animals, it was necessary to focus on this issue and take precautions contributing to protection of the human health, livestock health and the environment.
