"The paper focuses on corruption in the Slovak Republic after 1989 analyzed from the perspective of the new political economy of corruption. The first section explains the model of the new political economy of corruption that adequately describes the situation related to corruption in the 1980s. It is assumed that the analyzed corruption situation influenced the behavior of bureaucratic management of the Slovak government in the first stages of transition. In the case of the Slovak Republic it is argued that the first stages of transition could hardly be considered uncorrupted. In Slovakia, the situation was worsened by the lack of privately owned media monitoring. Nevertheless, it does not mean that privatization is not a good mechanism for decreasing a corruption situation in society. The response of later right-wing Slovak governments to the behavior of the first left-wing Slovak governments was explained in the context of the statistics of malfeasance connected with corruption and Corruption Perception Index provided by Transparency International. These empirical indicators suggested a small improvement in the repressive activity of governmental bureaucrats, as well as a small decrease of the perceived corruption situation in the Slovak Republic. However, the question is why this improvement recently disappeared." . "Z(MSM6215648904)" . "RIV/62156489:43110/11:00169916" . . "RIV/62156489:43110/11:00169916!RIV12-MSM-43110___" . . .
