"The most important commercial and experimental approaches (excluding military instrumentation and biodefense applications) used in mass spectrometry for microorganism identification and evaluation or their biological properties were summarized in this Review. Some of them are the subject of intellectual property rights, as documented by about fifty patent applications published in CAPLUS database in past five years. The most recent (mainly Patent Cooperation Treaty, PCT) applications are reported on AST and virulence testing and were submitted by Bruker Daltonics, bioMe?rieux,Syft Technologies, and other private companies. Some vendors also protected their devices for sample preparation and robotics.Microorganism identification based on mass spectrometry of the amplicons has already been heavily patented by Ibis (Abbott). Typing of bacteria and yeasts has become standard, and significant progress has also been made in the identification of filamentous fungi. Identification can be finished in one minute if direct transfer of front mycelium is carried out. Analysis time is extended to 10 min when an ethanol extraction step is added. For slowly sporulating or in other way problematic fungi, a broth cultivation protocol taking one day was already developed. We conclude that the progressive role of mass spectrometry in microbiology109 and associated clinical areas has brought new users into the mass spectrometry field. In turn, the field is continuously being expanded due to its robustness, sensitivity, selectivity, speed, and vendor support and investments. In the future, we expect the broad expansion of mass spectrometry to biological and biochemical testing areas temporarily being occupied by conventional approaches. Routine food quality control and detection of infectious diseases including viral infections will soon become a reality."@en . "10.1021/ac3031866" . .
