It emphasizes the role of a woman in the child care, particularly in the first months after childbirth during which mother is a hardly replacable element of child's life. In response to the changing social climate (gender equity, female emancipation, the growing role of a father) provisions regulating the institute of maternity leave which allows a male employee to fully and personally participate in the child care from its birth to a given age of the child have been laid down by the EC law and are therefore covered in the Czech law too. The length of maternity leave in individual countries of the EU ranges from 14 to 28 weeks depending on the traditions of the country, its economic, social and demographic situation etc. In the Czech Republic is the length of maternity leave 28 weeks (a multiple birth 37 weeks). Women and men who take charge of the child, are entitled to time off for a length 22 (31) weeks." . .
