"Johannes Tauler Illustrated"@cs . "[B20CD3FA05A0]" . "Two copper engravings are placed at the lifted pastedowns of an incunabulum of Johannes Tauler's Sermones, published in 1498 by Conrad Kachelofen in Leipzig: The Coat of arms with the instruments of the Passion by Israhel van Meckenem and Virgin Mary with Child standing on the crescent moon by the FVB Master. Both semantically rich images served in the Middle Ages as so called Andachtsbilder. However, glued at the lifted pastedowns the images did not necessarily have to function as stimulation for meditation, but could have been related directly to the text they provided the accompaniment for. For parallels with Tauler's opinions presented in his sermons, it could be possible to interpret The Coat of arms with the instruments of the Passion as an allegory of good nature and humility as well as faith. The leaf with the Virgin Mary could be understood as a depiction of the birth of Christ that takes place in the heart of the believer or as a representation of a triple baptism. The single-leaf prints then available on the market were supplied with only a limited repertoire of iconographic topics. Therefore, if the user wanted to accompany the collection of Tauler's sermons with related images, he had to settle for a rather conventional image in a new context which would then assume an altogether different meaning."@en . . .
