"Moravian Jews were notoriously lax in observing Jewish religious laws concerning wine during the sixteenth century. According to several independent sources Moravian Jews consumed non-kosher wine without any scruples. Moreover, their rabbis apparently justified the laxity arguing that the old prohibitions on consuming the Gentiles' wines were no longer in force. This situation provoked the anger of the famous Maharal of Prague, and he prohibited Moravian Jews to appoint rabbis in 1592. Although it is difficult to gauge whether Maharal's injunction was indeed observed, the reputation of Moravian Jews in general and their rabbis in particular was ruined for several decades. The situation began to change with the publication of a Hebrew book by Leib Pisek, a rabbi of Mikulov, in 1616, which related how the prohibition of drinking non-kosher wine was introduced in a local community. The rules of wine production and consumption in Moravia were definitely settled by Landesrabbiner Menahem Krochmal of Mikulov during the 1640s and 1650s. Drinking the wine of non-Jews was strictly forbidden, on the one hand, but the rules about the production of wine were interpreted in a liberal manner, on the other hand. During the seventeenth century Moravian Jews had to give up their earlier custom of drinking together with Gentiles, despite the obvious social disadvantages involved.
