"The paper shows at the example of two Dutch humanists, Hugo Grotius (Delft 1583 - Rostock 1645) and Pieter C. Hooft (Amsterdam 1581 - The Hague 1647) how translations from and to Latin had influence on modern thought and on the formation of modern Dutch language. One of the most important writings of Grotius was his De veritate religionis christianae (1620) that was the result of Grotius' own adaptation of his Dutch didactic poem Bewys van den waren Godtsdienst (1622). The paper shows how the act of translation and adaptation changed not only the language but also the accents ofthe work. Where the Dutch poem was intended for a broader Dutch public, the Latin treatise pointed towards an international learned audience. Hooft's main work, his Nederlandsche Histori\u00EBn (1642) went on the other way. In many things Hooft adapted the historic writings of Tacitus, whom he translated completely into Dutch."@en .
