The study presents results of anthropological research of 567 girls aged 11-15. The height of the girls was measured by anthropometer and their body weight by InBody 230 diagnostic device. Before measurement was taken, the girls had been asked %22Do you know what is your height and your weight?%22 With the measured and estimated parameters. The comparison of results showed that the measured parameters and the resulting BMI calculation were statistically significantly different from self-assessment by the girls. Girls tended to overestimate their body height and underestimate their body weight. Based on the measured parameters, the BMI category overweight included 8.11% and the category obesity included 8.99% of girls while based on self-assessment of both parameters the category overweight included 5.11% and the category obesity included 6.35% of girls. Classification of girls into BMI percentile bands showed that with a rising BMI and inclusion of a girl in higher BMI category, there was a gradually growing difference between actually measured and estimated body weight. The highest differences between measured and estimated weight were found in the category obesity (over 97th per.). The girls estimated their weight to be 3.83kg lower than their actual weight. The significant differences which were found between measured and estimated parameters show that when evaluating prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescent girls, the nutritional indicator BMI should be measured objectively using standardized anthropometric methods with the use of anthropometric instruments. Research which relies on BMI evaluated by subjective estimates of body height and weight and hence BMI, might bring inaccurate results with individuals, regional research or epidemiological studies."@en . .
