"This book is focussed on the needs of municipalities and towns aiming to deal with a process of efficient management of self-government activities. A systemic and conceptual regional management has not been much asserted in conditions of the Czech Republic so far. Although conceptual, rational, and efficient management of municipalities is a basis for ensuring sustainable development, what has prevailed with the municipality representatives so far were decision making activities aimed at dealing with acute problems and ad-hoc decision making according to current possible subsidies. The purpose of the publication is to help the municipality managers that want to control the self-government units efficiently. This entails among others to successfully define and achieve their goals, put projects and public contracts successfully into practice, incl. the process of their assignment and last but not least also to know their audience, i.e. citizens and their needs. In the first part the main differences between a management of a municipality and a private company environment are presented. Furthermore, a basic draft of the process of strategic management and planning is described. This draft is summarised into 12 basic steps. A substantial amount of attention is given to the field of regional marketing and the methods of its cooperation and participation of individual persons taking part in regional development; together with a focus on the area of increasing the regions\u2019 attractiveness and defining some ways for utilisation of the competitive advantages of the regions. A part of the publication deals with defining the basic areas of knowledge for project management and the criteria of project success.
