The empirical studies measuring just how institutions influence economic growth and investment has been scarce. This has mainly been due to a lack of data concerning the quality of institutions. The conference paper deals with institutions from the view of institutional economy and concentrates on measuring the quality of institutions. In this paper the most important empirical cross-(advanced) country studies discussing relationship between institutions, growth and investment are surveyed. All exploring empirical studies use a simple econometric framework with variety of objective and subjective institutional variables.
