"This article deals with the determination of the thickness of the zinc galvanized steel for the automotive industry using optical microscopy and glow discharge optical emission spectrometry. The heat-affected zone after two types of soldering (conventional MIG and CMT) was studied. CMT seems to be a very perspective technology of joining thin galvanized sheets. Low heat input of this technology leads to small damage of the zinc layer. This article reviews above all the soldered joint quality with regard to damage of the zinc layer. It was demonstrated that both compared technologies are applicable for the production when the appropriate parameters are used, but the CMT soldering achieves better quality results. Optical emission spectroscopy showed that in the case of CMT soldering there was 95% zinc concentration on the opposite side of the joint in the depth of 6.5 \u00B5m under the surface of the sheet, while in the case of MIG soldering the 95% zinc concentration appeared in the depth of 5.5 \u00B5m. The results of tests of microstructure showed that the thickness of zinc coating in the joint of the samples soldered using the CMT method was approx. 5 \u00B5m, but only approx. 3 \u00B5m in the case of the MIG soldering. The buying price of the power source for the CMT is approx. by 1/3 higher than that of the power source for the MIG soldering, but this higher investment returns in higher productivity of the CMT technology compared to the MIG technology. Therefore the CMT technology is advantageous also from the economical point of view. The results of this study lead to optimization of technology for production of automotive parts."@en . . .
