"The paper presents a verification of solidification of continuously cast round steel billets with a diameter 130 mm in the ProCAST simulation programme. The aim of numerical modelling realized under the conditions of the Department of Metallurgy and Foundry and Regional Materials Science and Technology Centre (RMSTC) at VSB-TU Ostrava, and in the cooperation with MECAS ESI s.r.o. company is the optimization of production of continuously cast round steel billets in the company ArcelorMittal Ostrava a.s. The paper describes the pre-processing, processing and post-processing phases of numerical modelling. Also, the problem with the determination of the thermodynamic properties of materials is discussed. Primary simulation was focused on modelling of 3D geometry for computation under the thermal steady state conditions. Input parameters of computation, such as casting speed and casting temperature, were determined by the real conditions of the casting. The heat losses along the casting strand in the primary and secondary zone of the cooling were defined by the user function of thermal boundary conditions. Two basic variants with different coefficients of the heat transfers in the zone of secondary cooling were computed. The thickness of the solidified shell of the strand at the end of the mould, the metallurgical length and the two-phase zone were predicted. As demonstrated, the results of the numerical simulations of primary basic technological variant depend on the definition of the input parameters, especially on the way of the definition of the heat transfer along the length of the casting strand. Therefore, in the next phase of research the attention will be focused on the verification of the temperature field along the casting strand under real casting conditions using pyrometers and thermovision."@en .
