"The current market environment is characterized by strong pressure of the customers to supply a wide range of products in small quantities. This fact causes a reduction in production capacity utilization in metallurgical industry. The article is focused on the possible ways of reducing extensive reserves in the heat treatment process of forged pieces by shortening the idle time in bottlenecks during this process. The researched process includes two continuous furnaces, straightening of forged pieces using a single straightening press, their cooling on a cooling bed and hardening in a bath. The objective is to design heuristic rules that will ensure maximum utilization of capacity by minimizing the conversion and set-up times of the furnaces used for heat treatment and the straightening press. Dynamic simulation has been selected to analyse the heat treatment process, to reveal the bottlenecks, and to propose and verify the rules. The total of four rules has been proposed. The basis of three of the rules is the accumulation of production orders into batches, which eliminates the conversion of furnaces and the necessity to set-up the press. One rule is related to the selection of the production batches processing method, which can take place in both furnaces simultaneously or separately. The acquired rules became the basis of the heuristic algorithm for planning and scheduling of the researched process."@en . . .
