"It is well known that the speed at which the strand in the continuous casting machine for casting steel (CCM) is pulled out of the mould and transported through the secondary cooling section, is an important variable in the process of continuous casting and is associated not only with surface and internal quality of the billet, but may have an impact on the emergence of the breakout. It is desirable not only to set the optimal casting speed, but keep it constant during casting. It is known that friction in the mould excites oscillations of the strand that manifest varying casting speed. Drawbenches together with a control system, which are designed to compensate changes in casting speed, in some cases, are not able to eliminate the fluctuations. Experimental measurements were carried out on the billet CCM No. 3 in ArcelorMittal Ostrava to analyze the causes of irregularities of casting speed. Measurements included the usage of a special diagnostic system DGS - xT of the company DASFOS CZr. s.r.o. for measuring the friction forces in the mould, in addition to speed sensing of the drawbench rollers, strand acceleration etc. The evaluation showed that it is necessary to distinguish two states of the strand motion. The first is a slight periodic variation of speed due to the action of external forces on the strand, which is damped by friction in the strand support and regulation of the drawbenches power. The second state is a great oscillation, called twitching of the strand. Statistical analysis of the measured data showed that the irregularity of casting speed related with certain variables, such as friction in the mould, but the dependence were not strong. The emergence of considerable twitching need to be considered from a probabilistic point of view and is mainly related to the frequency of the mould oscillation."@en .
