"This work is focused on the sorption of phosphorus from water solutions on selected types of blast furnace slags. The adsorption tests and chemical speciation of phosphorus were performed on all the samples. The effect of acidification on the sorption properties of the samples was also studied.The crystalline blast furnace slag seems to be the best sorbent of phosphorus with the highest sorption capacity of 19 mg (P) g-1. Sorption of phosphorus follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm and is high in the wide range of pH (4 - 12). The entire phosphorus sorbed on the crystalline slag is in the Ca-P form only. The precipitation of calcium phosphates (specially hydroxyapatite) is the main mechanism of the phosphorus retention from water solutions by this material. Lower sorption capacity of amorphous slag is probably caused by the lower calcium activity.
