"Upper Silesia is an area lying at the Czech-Polish border, characterized by heavy industry, extensive past and on-going underground coal mining and open-pit mining of other natural resources. The region is also a locus of coke production and metallurgy. The existence of the heavy industry places an ecological burden on the landscape and the region, producing the need for land rehabilitation allowing its reuse. There are a number of reclamation processes and solutions underway to rehabilitate the disturbed landscape. Managers and institutions dealing with land reclamation and rehabilitation needing to decide on the most suitable procedure for a particular site will benefit from our information system that enables them to create landscape and rehabilitation models including visualisation. The system gives users a tool that supports the visualisation of possible solutions to help them decide on the most suitable method. The general design procedure supported by the system was introduced to the public at the SGEM 2011 conference and the procedures for model landscapes were published at the SGEM 2013 conference. This article builds on this work and provides an overview of processes, methods and tools used to design an information system for the support of land rehabilitation in the region of Upper Silesia."@en .
