"The control and management of production systems, which are often operated in a continuous mode, 24/7, ask for extreme robustness of related information systems and control mechanisms. As such, a special, fault-tolerant (FT) category of information systems has been developed. The most usual FT system solution consists in doubling of the whole IS. If any of the system components fails, its function is taken over by its backup shadow that provides for a continuous functioning of the control system operated. A key FT solution component is the so-called watchdog. This component keeps a watchful eye on the production system status and if any failure happens, it instantly employs the appropriate shadow function component. The watchdog component provision embodies designing a hardware platform; an independent power supply and backup power supply, a communication mode with the IS core, a server condition monitoring, and an evaluating algorithm that provides for a switch-over command. Our Institute has been involved in research and development of FT systems and this paper reports on the status of the current knowledge in the field." . .
