It mainly affects air pollution; however, it also brings about the possibility of creating an explosive mixture of gas in the vicinity of closed mines. To resolve this issue, different countries in the world use different methods. This article describes the method applied in the Ostrava-Karvin\u00E1 district in the Czech Republic. As a passive form of protection, degasification wells are the most commonly used method. According to the results of measurements made in the course of a few years, it can be proven that using degassing wells leads to the reduction in the concentration of leaking methane.
