"The turbulent and transitional flow in a boundary layer is introduced as a dynamical process, the flowing fluid is shown as an extended dynamical system with number of effective degrees of freedom depending on the state of the system. The laminar-turbulent transition process is demonstrated on the canonical case of a flat-plate boundary layer. The known scenarios of early stage transition are reviewed. The main attention is paid to mechanisms of turbulence production in later phases of transition, when nonlinearities are important. The role of coherent structures in this process is analyzed, as they are essential for its dynamics.
