"A laboratory scale trickle-bed reactor was designed for biodegradation of the Remazol Briliant Blue R and Reactive Orange 16 dyes. Three carriers (Filtren TM foams, plastic brad and lufa) were chosen for biomass immobilization. The reactor was constructed from a glass tube (20 cm long, 7 cm inner diameter), equipped with two seals. Each bed of the carrier was characterised by two parameters: the liquid hold-up and the retention time at four different liquid volumetric flow rates. A distribution of retention time was also measured for each reactor at four different liquid flow rates. The smallest liquid hold-up was achieved in the reactor with the plastic brad and the highest one for the reactor with the lufa carrier. The longest mean retention time, 430 s, was achieved in the reactor with the lufa carrier at liquid flow rate of 6.81 cm3min-1 that is twenty times higher than the retention time in the reactor filled with the plastic brad.
