The bottlenecks can be identified by several criteria, e.g. high apparatus utilization, blocking of apparatuses prior to a bottleneck, etc. Different processing times for corresponding operations of multiproduct processes cause the bottleneck to move from operation to operation depending on the produced products, i.e., floating bottlenecks occur. The bottlenecks of a multiproduct line can be in some measure resolved by placing of intermediate storage before the critical apparatus. A simulation study of a model multiproduct line was carried out and based on the simulation experiments intermediate storage units were placed into the line. The results were compared with those of intermediate storage placement optimization. All mathematical and simulation calculations were carried out by means of Witness 2004 simulation software; Witness Optimizer 4.1 optimization module was used for optimization." .
