"For humans, foodstuff especially food of animal origin represent the important exposure route to perfluorinated compounds (PFCs). These halogenated pollutants have been used since 50s in various products from which continuously leaching to the environment and subsequently in the food chain, therefore PFCs are intensively studied in the environmental matrices and also in the human diets. In March 2010 the European Commission published recommendation 161/2010/EC to monitor of various groups of PFCs together with their precursors in food with the limit of quantification (LOQ) 1 ?g/kg. The European food safety Authority (EFSA), at the beginning of 2011, reported results from samples of food items collected in previous years (2000-2009) in seven countries. Data were reported on different sets of 17 PFCs. Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) was the most frequent compound (31%). The highest contamination both in terms of frequency and mean level was found in meat and edible offal of game animals, fish and seafood, whereas meat and edible offal of farmed animals resulted less contaminated. However, in total, results above LOQ were reported for only 11.8% of monitored PFCs.2 Based on these data, is necessary to improve the analytical methods which will be able to ensure an accurate assessment of the presence of PFCs in food and beverages at levels range in ng/kg and to report more data on PFCs in diet."@en .
