"A growing consumption of energy sources in transport sector in the European Union accompanied by rising greenhouse gas emissions stimulated a national effort to reduce the dependence on fossil fuels. Although most of bioethanol is currently produced from starch or sugar raw materials, attention is increasingly turning to bioethanol of 2nd generation made from cellulose. In spite of all advantages of lignocellulose, the main problem is that it cannot be directly used as a carbon source for a traditional ethanol producers and must be converted to simple sugars by a sequence of operations, which are energy-intensive and thus increase the price of final product. Several possibilities how to reduce the cost of lignocellulose ethanol, such as use of simultaneous saccharification and fermentation process, recycling of chemicals, enzymes and microorganisms together with revaluation of most of byproducts and use of recombinant strains are discussed."@en .
