"Soil heterotrophic microorganisms participate in the mineralization of organic compounds present in their environment. Pollution from anthropogenic sources can cause many places to be contaminated with xenobiotic chemicals. Biodegradation of xenobiotics can often occur due to structural analogy of chemicals and natural organic compounds, and also due to a wide substrate specificity of enzymes catalyzing this process. Secondary metabolites can serve as carbon or nitrogen sources for bacteria and therefore can cause changes in bacterial consortia and stimulate their enzymatic activity. The aim of this experiment was to investigate the effect of secondary metabolites contained in lemon pericarp, grapefruit pericarp and pears on bacterial diversity in soils long-term contaminated with PCBs. Amendment with natural materials led to stimulation of growth of cultured bacteria in comparison with control soil. Metagenomic analysis showed that natural compounds strongly influence bacterial diversity in the soil observed through investigations of total bacterial communities and subpopulations participating in the active metabolization of chlorobiphenyl and benzoic acid as well. Additionally, some bacteria actively minerazating chlorobiphenyl were detected. Grapefruit pericarp and pears are recommended for future experimetns based on the results of this study. Amendment with lemon peel probably caused inhibition of bacterial activity. Determination of PCB removal in soils after amendment with these natural materials has the potential for many future investigations. Results can lead to improved bioremediation procedures."@en .
