"In an effort to decrease a dependence on the fossil fuels, humanity seeks for alternative sources of energy, one of them being bioethanol produced via microbial fermentation. Whereas lignocellulose based materials can be prospectively exploited as renewable feedstocks, wheat straw was tested as a raw material for bioethanol production. To disturb the cellulose-hemicellulose-lignin complex, wheat straw was pretreated using acid (H2SO4) and alkaline (NaOH, NH3, Ca(OH)2) methods, delignification was taken as a criterion to evaluate efficiency of the process. Solid fraction of material containing mainly cellulose was then enzymatically hydrolyzed using Novozymes Biomass Kit enzymes to obtain fermentable sugars. The mild pretreatment of wheat straw with 2% NaOH was evaluated as a method leading to the highest yield of glucose after enzymatic treatment.
