"The one of the most widespread contaminants in rivers and industrial waste waters is phenol, toxic for microorganisms and higher organisms. It was found, that population of Rhodococcus erythropolis growing in biofilm could be efficient tool for phenol biodegradation. Bacteria R. erythropolis dispose of highly hydrophobic surface and prefer to adhere to hydrophobic materials. In compare with the application of hydrophobic or hydrophilic material as a biofilm carrier, hydrophobic carries make possible a developing of more stabile biofilm. This affects also a phenol degradation ability. The rate of phenol biodegradation was two-times higher in system with biofilm developed on hydrophobic carriers. The understanding of relationship between bacterial cell surface, adhesive properties and biofilms developing can open a way to creation of efficient and stabile biocatalysts for biotechnological proceses, e.g. phenol biodegradation and waste water treatment."@en . .
