"The purpose of this study was to verify the evolution of kinetic parameters of Aspergillusniger LPB 21 growth during citric acid production by solid-state fermentation (SSF) ofcassava bagasse. On-line monitoring of SSF allowed determining the relationship betweenCO2 progress, biomass and citric acid produced by the fungus. Biomass biosynthesis by thefungal culture is one of the most important factors of SSF and the metabolic activity of A.niger growth is associated to citric acid production. The experiments were carried out inhorizontal drum bioreactor (semi-pilot scale), which was coupled with a gas chromatographysystem to evaluate the release of CO2 evolved and the O2 consumption. Fermentation wasconduced for 144 h with initial substrate moisture of 60% using thermal treated cassavabagasse as sole carbon source. Urea, KH2PO4, FeSO4.7H2O and methanol were used to enrichthe medium. Citric acid production reached a maximum of 268,94 g/kg of DM in horizontaldrum bioreactor.
