"101585" . . . . "We focused on the effect of silica surface coatings on reactivity of zerovalent iron nanoparticles (nZVI) towards dissolved trichloroethylene in simulated conditions of groundwater. The iron nanoparticles were coated by a sodium silicate solution (NaSinZVI) and by TEOS according to the St\u00F6ber method (TEOSnZVI). In the batch test, the nanoiron particles were in contact with the soil containing a low proportion of organic carbon (foc = 0.22 - 0.29 %) and artificially contaminated groundwater (TCE ? 5 mg L-1). We observed a significant effect of soil buffering on the TCE removal and Fe0 corrosion of all studied iron nanoparticles. After a day, 87 %, 52 % a 88 %TCE was removed by nZVI, NaSinZVI and TEOSnZVI in the systems with the soil. The accelerated corrosion of Fe0 was observed with the tendency of TEOSnZVI }NaSinZVI }nZVI. NaSinZVI proved to be the most effective for the TCE removal with regards to its continuous reduction activity. We demonstrated that the iron nanoparticles modified with both silica coating are efficient agents with limited life time for environmental clean-up."@en .
