We studied the effect of silica surface modification on the reactivity of nanoiron particles for removal of chlorinated ethylenes. As a control we also tested the reactivity of a pure suspension of nanoscale iron particles. The iron nanoparticles were modified by tetraethylorthosilicate according to the St\u00F6ber process. Under nitrogen atmosphere, degradation batch experiments were prepared using iron overloading and artificially contaminated water (cCAHs approx. 18 mg/l). After 36 days of the experiment, PCE, TCE and cis-DCE were removed with 98%, 61% a 65% efficiency. The removal rate of PCE related per mass of zerovalent iron (0,041 l/g.d) was significantly fast for the silica modified iron nanoparticles than the pure material. In the case of TCE and cis-DCE we observed up to one order of magnitude slower removal rate by silica modified nanoiron particles. Our results suggested that silica modified nanoiron particles by tetraethylorthosilicate can remove chlorinated ethylenes at sufficient efficiency for remediation purposes."@en .
