"The future development of hydrogen systems implies a number of questions that need to be addressed. These include, in particular, safety provisions in hydrogen distribution and use in both fixed and mobile fuel system. Although it may appear that selective hydrogen detectors based on palladium can eliminate this problem completely, a closer look at the whole issue will reveal that the use of hydrogen odourising as an accompanying (redundant) safety system is warranted. Applying odourising to enhance the level of safety of modern energy equipment that uses hydrogen is limited by a number of obstacles. For example, the odorant used must not cause catalyst poisoning of fuel cells and must retain its properties in the conditions that prevail in hydrogen distribution and storage. the contribution summarises the information gathered so far on potentially the most suitable candidates for hydrogen odourising. these mainly include unsaturated hydrocarbons or mixtures of oxygen compounds with a majority share of acrylates, in which also minority components such as aldehydes, acetates and indene are represented."@en .
